What Is Lent?
Lent is a season of forty days, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday. Lent is a time of self-examination and reflection. In the early church, Lent began as a period of fasting and preparation for baptism by new Christians and then became a time of repentance by all Christians. Still today, Lent is a very meaningful 40-day journey for many Christians.
Lenten Practices
This year we follow a "year A" lectionary schedule, which assigns texts from John's gospel to the second through fifth Sundays in Lent, as well as Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday. Daily devotions for Lent, "Water & Spirit" based on John's gospel are now available to be picked up at the church.
I am also pleased to announce that there will be three "Lenten Soup Luncheons & Devotions" during Lent. The gathering schedules are as follows:
- Houlton UMC on Ash Wednesday, Feb 22 at 12 pm
- Hodgdon UMC on Wednesday, March 15 at 12 pm
- Mars Hill UMC on Wednesday, March 29 at 12 pm
In Christ,
Pastor Victor
