Monday Morning Coffee - Oct 27

Peace to you.

I hope you had a refreshing weekend and a meaningful Lord’s Day.

Sisters and brothers in Christ, as we look around at the bountiful harvest and the magnificent fall foliage, creation reminds us of the spiritual season we are about to enter.

November is the month of thanksgiving, a time to pause, celebrate, and give thanks to our gracious God.

  • On the first Sunday (Nov 2), we will celebrate All Saints Sunday, a time to remember those who have gone before us. We will honor their lasting legacy among us and give thanks for their faithful witness.

  • On the second Sunday (Nov 9 at 3 p.m.), our nine United Methodist churches will gather in Houlton for a community music service, featuring the Houlton Community Chorus and Handbell Choirs. It will be a joyful afternoon of praise and fellowship.

  • On the fifth Sunday (Nov 30 at 10 a.m.), our four sister churches will gather for a combined service and potluck fellowship at Hodgdon UMC. This will be a very meaningful time together as it also marks the first Sunday of Advent.

Since May, we have been journeying through the Book of Acts together. We’ve completed the first half (chapters 1–15), which tells of the church’s birth and growth. We will continue with the second half (chapters 16–28), following Paul’s second and third missionary journeys, in the new year.

For November, we begin a new sermon series titled “Enough.” Over four weeks, we’ll explore how Jesus alone is enough for all our needs—then and now:

  • Week 1: Grace Is Enough (Ecclesiastes 1:14; 2 Corinthians 12:7–10)
  • Week 2: Manna Is Enough (Exodus 16:1–18; John 6:30–35)
  • Week 3: The Shepherd Is Enough (Psalm 23; John 10:11–14)
  • Week 4: The Cross Is Enough (Deuteronomy 21:23; Hebrews 10:10–14)

You can watch previous services on our Houlton UMC YouTube channel and read previous messages from our Acts series in the archives below:

May the Lord bless you and keep you as you trust in Him this week.
Have a good walk with Jesus!  ♥️

In Christ's love,
Pastor Victor

Life Together - Oct 24

“Even in laughter the heart is sad, and the end of joy is grief.” (Proverbs 14:13)

Peace to you.

This week has been an emotional one for many in our church family. Even as we rejoice and celebrate birthdays with Debbie and little Hannah today, our hearts ache for those who have lost loved ones so suddenly. We hold the Brown family, the Guy family, the Ewing family, and all who are grieving in our prayers.

This afternoon, I had the privilege of sitting with Lenny and Mary, listening to their life stories. It’s hard to believe that Lenny will turn ninety next March, and Mary is already ninety-five. Yet they remain active, joyful, and deeply connected, doing life together.

They shared many stories — of work, faith, dancing, music, and love — but one message stood out to me: be content and find joy in simple things.
You can read their full stories here:

Their stories echo the wisdom of Ecclesiastes — to enjoy life and remember God, for every day is a gift.

So today, as we gather around our tables, let’s hug a little longer, say “I love you” one more time, and treasure each moment we have together. May our funeral services and Sunday worship this weekend become times of both gratitude and celebration, remembering the One who holds us all.

Have a peaceful weekend.

Monday Morning Coffee - Oct 20

Dear Church Family,

What is your favorite season or month?

For me, it’s October. I love the marvelous foliage, the refreshing air, the deep blue sky, and the beauty of harvest time. But I also love this month for another reason, because of the church calendar.

In October, we’re invited to slow down and reflect on important questions such as: “What is the Church?” “What is a pastor?” “What is laity?”

This past Sunday, we celebrated Laity Sunday together. It's a time to affirm that every believer is called to serve as a minister of God’s grace. With the theme “What does our church mean to you?”, we heard heartfelt stories from Andy Anderson, Paula Lilley, and Susan Laurence, as well as a beautiful video compilation from many others. You can watch them here:

(*Some responses were shortened for time, but you can read the full written versions here: Full Reflections)

We also heard an inspiring message from Rob Victor, reminding us of God’s amazing grace and the truth that all believers are ministers in God’s kingdom.

As I look around, I am deeply grateful to be part of this loving church family. I give thanks to God for you. Together, we make Christ known in our community.

In Christ's love,
Pastor Victor

Life Together - Oct 17

"The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ." (1Co 12:12, NLT)

It’s Senior Meals day!

This week, we didn’t have a main cook. Instead, several helpers worked together to prepare delicious ham and cheese sandwiches. One person cut the rolls, another layered the ham, another added the cheese, and someone else made the macaroni salad. Behind the scenes, others had shopped and prepared all the ingredients. Some packed the meals, and others delivered them. Everyone played a part, and together we made a wonderful team!

As I watched this, I thought: this is exactly what it means to be the church! We don’t rely on a single “rock star.” Each person has a role, and together we form one body, honoring Christ, who is the head.

This Sunday, we celebrate Laity Sunday. It is the perfect time to remember who we are as Christians. Just as each member needs the body, the body needs each member. Our church needs you, and you need the church. Join us and celebrate together—because together, we are the church.
