Life Together - July 25

“For he is our peace; in his flesh he has made both groups into one and has broken down the dividing wall, that is, the hostility between us.”

— Ephesians 2:14 (NRSV)

Peace to you, dear church family,

“It was the best conference ever!”
That’s what Joyce said — and I couldn’t agree more.

This week, my family and I attended the Korean Clergy Family Conference of the Northeast Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church, held in Boston. Every part of the gathering — from worship and seminars to small group sessions and meal fellowships — was deeply meaningful, edifying, and uplifting.

During one small group, a colleague shared honestly, “Nowadays, I feel tension and drained every time I attend other UMC gatherings. But this… this is so good.” We met with no agenda or issues to solve. We simply met person to person, heart to heart. We shared our midlife struggles, family and church challenges, call stories, joys, and fears. And in that space, I saw a glimpse of real hope.

For me, Ephesians 2 came alive: Jesus is still at work. He is still breaking down walls of hostility. He is still bringing peace. He is still creating one people out of many. I witnessed an extraordinary miracle of love in a very ordinary place.

Our God is able.

My prayer is that, as we gather to worship and fellowship this Sunday, we may encounter this living Jesus — the Prince of Peace — in a deeply personal way.

Monday Morning Coffee - July 21

Greetings from New Hampshire!

After the beautiful music service in Gardiner yesterday, my family and I began our journey to attend the UMC Korean Clergy Family Conference in Boston, which begins this evening.

One of my mentors—who is also a mentor to Joyce—graciously welcomed us into her home with radical and comforting hospitality yesterday. We arrived close to 10 PM, yet she had everything prepared for us, including a delicious homemade Korean-style seasoned chicken! Even though she had to leave early the next morning for a weeklong seminar, her warmth and care deeply moved us.

This morning, I had the opportunity to step into her prayer closet. The notes on the walls were filled with such authenticity, humility, and intimacy. As someone who grew up in a conservative Christian environment, I once held the narrow view that “liberals” didn’t take Scripture or Jesus seriously. How wrong and judgmental that was. My mentor, who is theologically progressive, gently shattered those prejudices. Her deep love for Christ and his people overflows. I see Jesus in her.

This week, I look forward to reconnecting with my fellow clergy and their families. Afterward, we’ll spend a few days enjoying God’s creation in the White Mountains as part of our family vacation.

I want to thank each of you for your ongoing support and love. I also want to thank our faithful lay leaders—Duane Quint (Hodgdon), Susan Laurence (Houlton), and Andy Anderson (Mars Hill). I give thanks for Pastor Mary (Mars Hill and Houlton) and Duane (Hodgdon), who will lead worship on the 27th. For any pastoral emergencies, Rev. Dale Holden has kindly offered to be available. You may reach her at 532-7165 or jimdale.holden@gmail.com.

If you haven’t already, you can watch Sunday’s worship services or read my message using the links below:

May the God of grace fill your heart with fresh joy as you work, rest, sing, and travel this week. Thank you for being a beloved part of God’s family.

In Christ's love,
Pastor Victor

Life Together - July 18

“Christ in Ten Thousand Places”

This week’s reflection comes from a book by one of my mentors, Eugene Peterson. In Christ Plays in Ten Thousand Places, he reminds us that Jesus is not only found in sacred spaces or holy moments, but also in the ordinary, daily rhythm of life.

Christ is present not just in worship, but in our work, our rest, and our relationships. We can see Jesus not only on Sunday—but also from Monday through Saturday.

We see Jesus in Brian, persevering and healing as he returns home.
We see Jesus in Carl’s smile as we celebrate his birthday.
We see Jesus in the joyful pink of Hodgdon church as we serve together.
We see Jesus in the voices of our book club as we listen and care.
We see Jesus in the bright eyes of children as we celebrate Korean Day and its diversity.

As we open our eyes and hearts, we realize Christ is nearer than we think. May we grow in attentiveness and wonder—learning to see Jesus in ten thousand places, Sunday through Sunday.

This Sunday, Hodgdon UMC will host its monthly coffee hour following the service.

At Houlton UMC, our summer coffee hour (July & August) now takes place before worship, from 10:15 to 10:45 AM. Worship still begins at 11 AM.

“This small shift allows us to enjoy fellowship with a fresh heart and mind, then enter worship more fully present. And as a bonus, we return home a bit earlier. We’ll try this rhythm for the summer—and if it blesses us, we may continue.”

Life Together - July 12

*Photo: Houlton Farmer's Market (July 12, 2025)

Where did the time go?

I suddenly realized this morning that when I first took Lydia and Abe to the farmer’s market, they were only four and three years old. Now, our youngest daughter Hannah is already about to turn six.

My family and I love our local farmer’s market – fresh vegetables, lovely handmade crafts, beautiful flowers, live music, sweet aromas, and most of all… familiar faces! Joyce and I always encounter someone we need to see at that moment – sometimes a person we just met the other day at church, other times someone we haven’t seen in a long time.

We listen. We talk. We share our lives.
I see Jesus in the marketplace.

As I look around, the song “People Need the Lord” comes to mind:

Everyday they pass me by
I can see it in their eyes
Empty people filled with care
Headed who knows where

On they go through private pain
Living fear to fear
Laughter hides their silent cries
Only Jesus hears

People need the Lord, people need the Lord
At the end of broken dreams, He's the open door
People need the Lord, people need the Lord
When will we realize people need the Lord?

This week has been peaceful externally, but internally, I have walked through a rough valley. Yet God’s Word and His people have sustained me.

I can’t wait to gather and worship together with you this Sunday.

May the Lord fill your hearts with new hope as you turn to Him and trust Him.

Monday Morning Coffee - July 7

God always speaks...through prayer, through conversations with friends, and through the beauty of nature.

This morning, I heard God’s voice through today’s Upper Room devotion. It told the story of a young boy who offered his simple meal—five loaves and two fish. The story of the Feeding of the Five Thousand has always been one of my favorites in the Bible. Whenever I feel like I’m not enough, this story brings deep comfort and assurance: God’s grace is always enough, no matter what.

Perhaps you felt something similar this past Sunday. For me and my family, it was an emotionally difficult day—the first Sunday we weren’t able to worship together as a whole family. Some of my children wept. I wept inside, too. It felt like a piece of my heart was missing. The sanctuary felt more empty than ever.

But in my devotion time, God gently shifted my focus back to gratitude—through the same story of the five loaves and two fish.

Today, I want to express heartfelt thanks:
... I’m grateful for Spirit-filled worship.
... I’m grateful for the sweet fellowship we share.
... I’m grateful for all of our faithful leaders and servants—greeters, coffee hour hosts and hostesses, children’s messengers, Sunday School teachers, musicians, communion stewards, tech team, liturgists, and preachers.
... I’m especially grateful to Jack Forbush, who preached at Mars Hill UMC this Sunday. Thank you also to our dedicated Lay Servant Ministry team and Pastor Mary for your faithful leadership and partnership in the gospel of Jesus Christ.

If you missed Sunday’s service, you can still read my message or watch the service recordings here:

May the Lord take our five loaves and two fish—and use them for His glory this week.

Life Together - July 5

Peace to you.

I hope you had a meaningful Fourth of July.

For me, it was a blessing to watch the parade with my family and church family from our church parking lot. Often, we take our freedom for granted. The parade, songs, and flags reminded me that our freedom was given to us at great cost.

In the same way, I realized I have taken for granted the gift of worshiping together as a family. Since October 2022, our family has been worshiping in two teams – one going to Hodgdon and the other to Mars Hill, then uniting for the Houlton service. Since September 2024, our two older children have been away during the school year. And starting this Sunday, Joyce and I will no longer be worshiping together on Sundays.

Yet I trust that God makes everything beautiful in its season. Wherever we are in our journey, God’s grace is always sufficient. There is always something to celebrate and give thanks for. So let us come and celebrate Jesus together this Sunday!

☕ Coffee Hour Time Change

Dear Houlton saints, starting this Sunday, Coffee Hour will move to before worship, from 10:15 to 10:45 AM. Worship will still begin at 11 AM.

This small change will allow us to enjoy fellowship with fresh hearts and minds, and then enter worship fully present. Plus, we can return home a little earlier. We will try this new rhythm for July and August, and if it feels right, we may continue.
