Life Together (May 30)

“I am doing a new thing. Do you not see it?” — Isaiah 43:19

Yes, God is still doing wonderful things among us and around us! Just as He once connected Jewish Peter and Roman Cornelius, God has now connected us with the Wang family from Shanghai, China. Who but our amazing God could orchestrate such a divine appointment?

Today, I had the great privilege of sharing a meal with our new friend, Hong, and listening to his moving faith journey. From his grandfather’s conversion during the Qing Dynasty—thanks to the work of American missionaries—to the hidden home worship during the Cultural Revolution, and now to the present-day worship in Houlton, Hong’s family story testifies to God’s grace, perseverance, and unshakable faithfulness.

After hearing his story, I couldn’t help but lift my hands and say, “Hallelujah!” Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

You can read Hong’s full story on our “Faithbook” blog:

As we continue to share our stories and lives together, may God be exalted among us, and may our faith be strengthened and mutually encouraged.

Special Services in June

The month of June brings many reasons to celebrate and worship together:

Children’s Sunday

  • June 8 – Houlton UMC

  • June 15 – Hodgdon UMC

  • June 22 – Mars Hill UMC

Pentecost Sunday – June 8
Let us celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the Church with joy and fire in our hearts!

Father’s Day – June 15
We give thanks for fathers, grandfathers, spiritual fathers, and mentors in our lives.

Combined Worship Service – June 29 at Houlton UMC
All three of our churches will gather as one church family to celebrate Pastor Joyce’s new appointment to Stetson Memorial UMC in Patten. Join us for a special service followed by a Love Feast Potluck Luncheon. Bring a dish to share and your warm blessings for Pastor Joyce as she begins this new chapter in ministry.

730 Prayer Movement

We invite all three of our churches to unite in prayer each day at 7:30 a.m. or 7:30 p.m., whichever fits your schedule best.

And on Thursdays from 7:30–7:58 p.m., we gather in person at Houlton UMC or on Zoom for a focused prayer time.
(Why 7:30–7:58? Houlton & Hodgdon’s zip code is 04730, and Mars Hill’s is 04758!)

This week’s prayer focus:

  • For revival—beginning with our own hearts, then our churches, and then our nation

  • For smooth transitions in children’s ministries and leadership

  • For our country—its leaders, communities, and schools

Mission Opportunities

Hodgdon – Let’s show appreciation to the Hodgdon Fire Department for their ongoing service.

Houlton & Mars Hill – We continue to support Hope Secondary School in Bethlehem, West Bank. Even amid turmoil, Hope School stands as a beacon of light. And we stand with them. (https://www.hopesschoolbeitjala.com/)

  • Hope School's Vision: To offer excellent education to children in need, grounded in Christian values of love, peace, tolerance, dignity, and justice.
  • Founded: In 1962 by Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), and now run by the Arab Charitable Society.
  • Mission: To provide high-quality education to orphans and disadvantaged youth in the Bethlehem area and across Palestinian territories.
  • Goal: To create a sustainable educational project that transforms lives through love, learning, and faith.

Let us remember our local and global mission partners in prayer and in giving.

Life Review Update

 Dear Church Family,

Grace and peace to you. I hope you had a meaningful Memorial Day weekend.

This past Sunday, I shared Pastor Kwan Lee’s “Pentecost moment”—a powerful testimony of the Holy Spirit’s renewing work in his life. You can now read his full story, along with reflections from Pastor Joyce and myself, on how God has led each of us through seasons of calling, struggle, and grace.

I invite you to read, reflect, and be encouraged:

And I’d love to invite you to share your story as well. How has God worked in your life? What moments of grace, growth, or guidance stand out to you?

If you're open to sharing, I’d be honored to help you put it together. Whether it’s a few memories or a fuller reflection, your story matters—and it may be just the encouragement someone else needs.

Soli Deo Gloria! Glory to God alone!

In Christ's love,
Pastor Victor

"Life Together" Weekly Newsletter – May 23, 2025

“The believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the community, to their shared meals, and to their prayers.”
—Acts 2:42 (CEB)

Dear Beloved Church Family,

How was your week?

As a church, we’ve shared another week full of grace and connection. The photo collage attached captures just a few beautiful moments: we gathered to study God’s Word and share meals, celebrated birthdays, prepared special music for this Sunday, received a generous gift—a grand piano!—and worshiped with the Gardiner residents in an uplifting service. God continues to weave our lives together in joy and love.

Aldersgate Day Service – This Saturday at 6 PM

Our story continues! This Saturday, May 24 at 6:00 PM, nine Methodist churches across Aroostook County will gather for a special Aldersgate Day Service at Grant Memorial UMC in Presque Isle, commemorating John Wesley’s heartwarming spiritual awakening.

The service will include inspiring readings, uplifting music, a children's handbell choir, a pick-up choir, and a worship dance. If you'd like to join the pick-up choir, please arrive by 5:30 PM.

🫖 Light refreshments will follow.
💝 Offering will support Good Shepherd Food Bank. (Checks can be made out to Aroostook Cluster UMCs.)
🚗 Need a ride or want to carpool? Call or text me at 207-538-0778.

Come, let our hearts be stirred!

This Sunday – Family Worship & Love Feast

This Sunday, we celebrate Family Worship (at Mars Hill and Houlton) and continue to rejoice in the wonderful work of the Holy Spirit across our three churches:

  • Houlton UMC – Worship at 11 AM, featuring special music by the Community Handbell Choir.

In Houlton, our Pick-Up Choir will sing “Spirit Song,” and our growing Praise Band will offer “You Are My All in All.” After the service, join us for a Love Feast Potluck Luncheon in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring your favorite dish or dessert to share!

Life Together – “Back to Basics”

Dear Church Family,

Quiz Time!
What do these names have in common?
Joseph Scott, Lucas Ramsey, Clint Cushman, Bob Cowperthwaite, Sabra Scott, Karl Woods, Blinn Boone

The answer: They all had birthdays this week!
What a week of celebration it has been. Wishing each of you a very happy birthday from your church family.

A special shoutout to Blinn Boone, who turned 92 this Friday! I had the privilege of celebrating with him and listening to his remarkable life story. Blinn and his beloved wife, Joan, celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last October. Joan will turn 90 this June. Together, they have been pillars of Mars Hill UMC and are deeply respected in our community.

When I asked Blinn how he hopes to be remembered, he answered:

“A decent man.”
Then he added, “If I’ve done anything worthwhile in this life, I hope it’s been showing up—not with grand gestures, but with consistency. Day after day, in ways big and small. That’s the life I’ve lived. Honest work, quiet faith, and love for my family. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

I also asked Joan the secret of their strong marriage. Her answer:

“The secret to our strong marriage—over seventy years now—has been patience, unconditional love, and commitment. We didn’t always agree, but we always respected each other. Blinn never raised his hand to me or spoke harshly. We supported one another and made decisions together, always grounded in faith.”

Driving home after the visit, I found myself reflecting deeply. One phrase stayed with me: “Back to basics.”
Be honest. Be kind. Be patient. And do it again and again.

You can read their full faith story here:

What a gift it is to have Blinn and Joan among us.
We are truly blessed with many beautiful role models in our faith community.
